Scar Therapy and Amputations

There is no worse soft tissue damage than surgeries and ultimately amputation. Every layer of soft tissue and bone have been severed with amputation. The trauma to the tissue is immense. The body has to cope and find ways to repair damage.

Even though there are many complications or comorbidities, the context of this article concentrates on the necessity of immediate scar therapy following a surgery. After lymph drainage massage and initial closing of the wound, soft scar massage and skin serums should start immediately.

All surgeries, including amputations, traumatize the tissue. The wound healing is faster with the aid of MLD (lymph drainage massage) right after surgery. In order for the scar to become more esthetic the wound needs to be treated with the right serums as soon as the wound closes. The right serum encourages original cell tissue growth instead of hard fibrotic scar tissue.

For amputees the ethics of the scar might not be as important as the healing of the tissue to be soft in order to fit into prosthetics smoothly without discomfort. Hopefully this will reduce the necessity of corrective post amputation surgeries. To achieve that multiple sessions of scar therapy will be mandatory. Scar therapy can be painful. Multiple tools, like vibration and cupping may be used when the tissue has reached enough healing in order to be manipulated more vigorously.

As it gets warmer many people start to become more outdoorsy and active. Just a reminder to limit outdoor activities on hot days to the morning or evening hours to prevent sunburn and heat related symptoms. Now more than ever do you need to stay hydrated. Unless otherwise prescribed the average person should drink according to the Mayo Clinic at least 11,5 cups per day for women and 15,5 cups a day for men. More, if you are in hot climates, especially dry heat where you don't recognize how much water you loose or with exercise. According to the Los Angeles Times 599 heat related deaths had occurred within the last decade. According to one environmental study during July/August of 2006 11,500 ER visits were contributed to heat related injuries in California alone. Be especially vigilant while barbecuing during hot weather and don't drink alcohol while manning the grill. Alcohol enhances the possibility for heat stroke tremendously. Always wear a hat and try to remain in the shade. I am a heat stroke surviver myself and if you had a heat stroke once, you might be more susceptible for repeated heat strokes. If I have an all day outing in the summer, like going to the zoo, or Sea World, I have to wet my clothes in regular intervals and douse my head with water and wear a hat. Otherwise I will get very sick. There goes all vanity out the door. lol Learn More
